A venture philanthropist and consultant, Derrick funds and advises teams of educators and entrepreneurs launching new, innovative schools, programs, and technologies in early childhood and PreK-12 education. Currently, Derrick is Director and Head of Community at Promise Venture Studio, a new non-profit venture studio that attracts, supports, and connects entrepreneurs and funders focused on early childhood development. Before this, he was an associate partner at NewSchools Venture Fund where he led sourcing, diligence, selection, and grants management for investments in new school models. A Teach For America alumnus, earlier in his career, Derrick was a teacher and school leader at Success Academy Charter Schools. His students consistently ranked in the top 1% in math and top 2% in reading in their state. A first-generation college graduate, Derrick received a bachelor’s degree from Morehouse College where he was a Gate’s Millennium Scholar and Oprah Winfrey Scholar and a master’s degree from Stanford University where he was a Rathbun Fellow.
